You picked a picture of the best one to get, IMO. The NAs have really aged well in looks, weigh nearly nothing, and can still be found cheap. Someone posted one in Sacramento with high miles but running, for $1600. That’s pocket change when you’re talking about owning a track car. I’m really curious to see how many seconds a stock NA Miata will beat my Fiat by on a short autocross track.... I’m guessing at least 4. If I race prepped the Spider with better wheels, more power, stripped of all extraneous weight, full welded cage— maybe even.

One of my favorite pastimes at AutoX events is watching the big HP owner’s faces droop from a smile to a frown as they notice 130HP Miatas on the board that are 2 seconds faster than their 500HP builds...

I see that you do not have a Miata and want a Miata. I just so happen to have a Miata and not want a Miata.

Because cheap, reliable and fun?

I’ve honestly grown to love the NB the most. With a hard top they look like a mini slightly-disproportionate FD.

I prefer the NA but I can see that.... that extra 200 lbs tho.... ugh. It’s like driving with a big person next to you all the time...

Given that the car pictured probably doesn’t have any suspension travel, that will be often.

Nice wheels. They’d look good on my Mini. How big are they - 16's...?

They have aged really well - completely right about that. My favorite generation for sure (former 95 owner) but I saw another NC Miata today and looking at the front of it, you just can’t help but smile - it’s just such a happy car. It’s a shame though that (imo) they made it so chunky - or at least look that way. The new ND is awesome looking (taillights a different story) but comparatively menacing looking at the whole Miata family tree. But of course, the only thing happier than an NC Miata is an NA :D

They’re 15" Panasport Racing wheels. It’ll have stock NB2 5-spokes on it when I sell it.

Portland, OR-ish area. $3k-ish. ‘94 (1.8!), 154,000 miles.

It’s always funny how 15s seem so big(-ish. I know they had 16s from the factory too) on Miatas but put them on any car today and you’d laugh at how small they are.

But still, perfect size imo. Unless your brakes don’t fit in em... Then you can go 16s ;)

what if i had a 500hp Miata....

but seriously, I do HPDE with a 550hp Dodge Charger, and this is how my day does: give point by to Miata entering the corner, receive point by from Miata entering straightaway

500 HP Miata? You do everything imagineable to try to maintain some traction, and still slide right off the track :-)

Sounds about right— a real full-sized track opens things up a lot for putting down power in the straights! Driving with that much power on the tiny AutoX tracks is just an exercise in frustration. The best way I can describe wrestling my friend’s ‘12 Camaro SS around a track is “on rails, that were placed on top of an ice skating rink.” It felt dynamically great, but comically oversized and overpowered for the series of slaloms, switchbacks and sweeps...

Trying to Auto-x my car would just equate to lots and lots of tire smoke. It would be quite fun, but also would result in the senseless slaughter of many orange cones.
